Shirt Styles

The occasion on which a shirt is to be worn will, broadly speaking, determine its style and specifications. Below are examples of common shirt styles.

Day Shirt

To be worn on a day-to-day basis whilst working. A day shirt may have button cuffs for convenience and its collar type will be determined by the style of tie it is to be worn with.

Evening Shirt

To be worn on evening events. Evening shirts may have a ruffled or Marcella front, a Wing-tip collar to accommodate a bow tie and French Double cuffs. They will most likely be white in colour and made of silk.

Weekend Shirt

To be worn during outdoor activities. A Weekend shirt will have a fuller cut and be made of a bolder fabric.

Beach Shirt

To be worn on informal occasions and in hot climates with maximum comfort in mind. A beach shirt will have a looser fit, fewer front buttons and potentially a lido style collar. It will be made of a thin, breathable fabric.

Women’s Shirt

Women’s shirts will have a softer aesthetic in comparison to men’s. To achieve this effect, the stiff interlining usually found in the cuffs and collars of men’s shirts will be omitted.
